Tesla Powerwall home batteries in Colorado

Powerwall is the home battery most Colorado solar installers offer. It's rated to 9,843 feet, which covers the Front Range and most mountain towns but not the very highest, and its warranty depends on a Tesla certified installer and an internet connection.

Models for home backup

Powerwall 3

Usable energy13.5 kWh (Tesla lists it as nominal battery energy, AC)
Continuous power11.5 kW max continuous discharge; 5 kW max continuous charge; 15.4 kW off-grid discharge when PV-only (-20 to 25 C), per installation manual
Peak or surge185 LRA load-start capability (1 s)
Largest systemUp to 4 Powerwall 3 units (limited to 3 for outdoor wall-mount or indoor installs), plus up to 3 Expansion units on the leader unit, for a maximum of 7 units
Whole or partial homeBoth. Whole-home backup via Gateway 3 or Backup Switch; partial-home via Backup Gateway 2
Solar inverterYes, 20 kW max solar STC input, 6 MPPTs
Battery chemistrynot published on the datasheet

Powerwall 3 Expansion

Usable energy13.5 kWh nominal per unit (distributor listing; Tesla's own system-design page does not state the kWh)
Continuous powerNone of its own. It has no inverter, so it adds storage only and does not raise power output
Peak or surgen/a (power comes from the Powerwall 3)
Largest systemUp to 3 per system, all on the leader Powerwall 3. Expansion units on a follower Powerwall 3 will not work
Whole or partial homeSame as the Powerwall 3 it is attached to

Warranty

10 years from installation, covering Powerwall 2 AC, Powerwall+ and Powerwall 3. Guarantees 70% energy retention (9.45 kWh of 13.5 kWh) at 10 years. Unlimited cycles when used for solar self-consumption or time-based control plus backup. Other uses are capped at 37.8 MWh of AC throughput. Must be bought from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer and installed in the US. Repair or modification by anyone else voids coverage. Tesla needs internet access for remote firmware updates: if the unit stays offline for long periods or is not registered, Tesla may honor only 4 years.

Altitude

Maximum elevation 3,000 m (9,843 ft), for both Powerwall 3 and the Expansion unit. No derating curve is published. Colorado sites above about 9,843 ft fall outside the rating.

Cold weather

Operating range -20 C to 50 C (-4 F to 122 F), with possible derating above 40 C (104 F). Tesla says Heat Mode keeps Powerwall 3 charging and discharging properly down to -4 F. A separate charging-temperature range is not published. Storage range is -20 C to 30 C.

Monitoring and the app

Tesla app, over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or built-in LTE cellular. Cellular is meant as the backup connection, and Tesla recommends Wi-Fi or Ethernet as the primary. Without internet, Powerwall keeps running in its last mode and still provides backup, but the app has no remote monitoring. Tesla does not say whether the app can connect locally during an outage. Storm Watch charges the battery to full ahead of forecast severe weather.

Recalls

2025-11-13: Certain Tesla Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems (about 10,500 units). Powerwall 3 is not included.. Hazard: Lithium-ion cells can fail in normal use, causing overheating and in some cases smoke or flame: a fire and burn hazard. There were 22 overheating reports, including 6 of smoke and 5 of fire with minor property damage, and no injuries. The remedy is free replacement. Tesla remotely discharged affected units that were online, and owners should keep the system online and check the Tesla app.. CPSC notice
