Colorado Peak Power

Backup power brands for Colorado homes

Fifteen brands that Colorado homeowners actually buy, checked against what matters at 5,000 to 10,000 feet: altitude ratings, cold-weather limits, warranty terms, and recalls. Every page links its sources.

Which brands Colorado installers carry

Of the 83 Colorado backup-power installers in our October 2026 survey, 57 list Generac, far ahead of Kohler (5) and Briggs & Stratton (4). For home batteries, Tesla Powerwall leads (10), followed by Enphase (9) and FranklinWH (4).

Home batteries and altitude

Batteries don't lose power with elevation the way engines do, but every major brand publishes a maximum installation altitude. In Colorado that rating can rule a battery out.

BatteryAltitude ratingWarranty
Tesla PowerwallRated to 9,843 ft (3,000 m)10 years, 70% capacity retained
Enphase5P to 8,202 ft; 10C to 9,842 ft15 years or 6,000 cycles, 60% retained
FranklinWHRated to 9,843 ft (3,000 m)15 years or 60 MWh (aPower 2 and S)
SolarEdgeHome Battery 400V to 6,562 ft; Nexis to 9,842 ft10 years, 70% retained; must stay online

Generators and altitude

Engines lose power in thin air. Manufacturers publish how much; most use about 3.5% per 1,000 feet, which is roughly 18% less output in Denver and about a third less in Breckenridge.
